Delray Beach Stuff
The weekly vollyball on the beach pich up games continue - all are invited to attend and participate. It's more active in season but they generally meet year round.
The Beach Blunt Boys have been holding their Friday night 'meetings' in the same place for the past several years. It's a more mature, well behaved crowd that stays quiet. The police never interfere with the event although they know about it. Getting an invite is tough, but if you do you will be amazed by quality of the crowd and their conversations.
The new Ipic theater is opened, amd immediately filed for bankruptcy. It will have 'private viewing pods' with blankets. (that may get weird) A few favorite restaurants have closed and a couple new ones opened. Johnnie Browns still rocks nightly, with an occasional celebrity grabbing the mic.
Subculture Coffee has moved to Swinton Avenue, after a spat with their landlord. They will be moving again as their current building is scheduled for demolition and a big redevelopment.
Parking has totally changed. The zoning department is selling public parking spaces to local developers for $23k each. There's always a new ride service crusing Atlantic Avenue.
While everyone knows Atlantic Avenue, Pineapple Grove has become the new hot spot. Take a walk north on Second Avenue and see a newer side of this happening downtown. Restaurants, salons, wine bars and some fabulous, modern condos, including the iconic Astor.
The Trouser Shop closed as Bruce has finally retired. It's now home to a specialty shop selling nice bathing suits. The newsstand is still going strong.
The scene for locals is changing. New apartment construction has peaked with the new Caspian Apartments, SOFA Delray and Worthing Place, all promoting 'Lifestyle Community' living. Studio apartments start at $1,700- per month in these newer buildings.
There is very active Freelance population here. Lot's of Internet Marketing and Social Media people, photographers, wellness trainers and a very skilled personal development pro. (a great activity to attend while in town)
The Downtowner Trolly was cancelled, then after a local uproar, it's back, for now. It was never very reliable. Sometimes they would arrive every 20 minutes, then (often) it would be an hour till one showed up. I've talked to the drivers who told me there is no schedule, and they need to take breaks sometimes. So, we'll see how the new service works out.
A fun new thing is to catch the social media photographers doing a shoot at a local restaurant. The chef will create beautiful versions of their specialties, have them photographed, and then the food is set out on the bar and offered as free appetizers during happy hour. Yummy!
Rock Burger closed and was immediately replaced by The Chopping Block, run by Celebrity Chef Trevor McGrath. That lasted avout a year and closed. Then Tapas 63 set up shop for a few months and closed. Now, the space is beig taken over by Tin Roof.
